Social children don't have to be friends

If you don't know, I have a blog for adults working with preschoolers over here. We've been discussing friendships over there so I thought I bring a key definition to discuss the semantics of: social.

What we really want is for children to be social; what we mistakenly do is call all children friends. Let's look at the definition of social:
  • Social is a adjective that means pertaining to, devoted to, or characterized by friendly companionship or relations; or seeking or enjoying the companionship of others, friendly, sociable, gregarious; or of, pertaining to, connected with, or suited to polite or fashionable society; or living or disposed to live in companionship with others or in a community, rather than in isolation; or of or pertaining to human society, especially as a body divided into classes according to status
This is exactly what I have been trying to get through to so many teachers and adults working with young children. I don't know why, but this is the first time that I actually looked up the specific word social. I'm glad I did.

I don't know hwy it took me so long to do it, but it was totally worth it!
